Donation of School Supplies
In the US, nearly every town has a Dollar Store. In Belize there are none and most of what is found at Dollar Stores in the US, costs between $2.50 to $5.00 here in Belize. There are many needy school children whose families cannot afford school supplies and would really benefit from the donation of a package of a school bag, notebooks, writing pads, pens, pencils etc... If you would like to make a donation of some school materials, please bring it with you when you come. If you are bringing a lot of material and are coming on a cruise ship please ask the ship to request clearance of the donated items as you board.
School Supplies Delivered in 2016!
Donated school supplies were delivered to the Gales Point Government School and the St. Therese Roman Catholic School in Burrel Boom at the start of the new school year. Thanks to donations made by our guests we were able to donate a total of 94 mesh drawstring bags to the all students at Gales Point and 10 assorted (4 backpacks packed with supplies for older students and 6 mesh bags for younger students) to Burrel Boom for those who needed the most. The bags were packed according to age, with the youngest receiving crayons and pencils, while the older students received colored pencils and the oldest students received pens. Each bag included a folder and notepad along with erasers and glue sticks. The teachers received supplies as well including construction paper, large boxes of crayons and educational cards. A limited supply of backpacks were distributed to the principle of Gales Point Government School to distribution to the students who needed backpacks. A variety of supplies that were in limited quantities like construction paper, calculators, scissors, large boxes of crayons were distributed to teachers for use in their classrooms.
Both schools were very grateful for the gifts and thanked us and our guests for the donation. St Therese Roman Catholic School "are in the process of opening a computer lab and also need sport equipments and anything to assist our students in anyway." To prepare for each year students are required to have 8 blanks, or notepads, so we purchased these locally and supplemented the donated items. Thank you everyone who made a donation to the school supplies, it was very much appreciated! If anyone will be bringing down supplies please consider packing a backpack with the following items: notebooks, folders, pencils, crayons, scissors, calculator, glue sticks, educational coloring book.
Donation of Musical Instruments
Playing an instrument in the school band is part of the elementary and high school system in the US, but not so in Belize. Music is so important to young people's lives and we thought maybe there were some instruments tucked away in your attic that were not being used, but would be VERY useful here in Belize. If you have a musical instrument in your attic that you are no longer using, please consider donating it to a music program in Belize. You can bring it with you when you come to Belize, or you can send it on down. We will ensure that the instrument you donate will benefit the local school children.
